Chelsea sign Pulisic for £58 million

Wed Jan 02, 2019 1:05 pm

"It's a privilege to have signed for such a legendary club," he said.

In player speak this translates to: "They are paying me a hell of a lot of money and by-the-way, where is Chelsea?

I can't believe it. I can't believe it. Football. Bloody hell.

Chelsea have been around over 100 years, they have been one of the top teams in the league for almost 20 years now, they started the trend of sugar daddy clubs which basically changed football (not necessarily in a good way), they have won literally every type of silverware there is, lots of them many times over, they have had many of the best players of this generation play for them, as well as some in the past. Chelsea is, for all intents and purposes, a legendary club.

Notts County have been around since 1862, but they aren't legendary. Chelsea, having been founded in 1905 are actually a fairly new club by English standards. For most of that history, they were also rans. It's only since 04/05 that they've been a top club really.

114 years isn't new. And I noticed you ignored all the other points I made. It's petty for fans of one club to deny the success of others, especially when it's so painfully obvious.

I've not ignored it. The point was a successful Chelsea is still a teenager. That's hardly legendary.

114 years is relatively new in English football. Of the current 92 League clubs, Chelsea are the 72 oldest, and several of those clubs are reformed versions of older teams, including 2 who came out of Wimbledon.

No one is denying over the last decade and a half they've been a top club. But legendary implies a history they don't have.

It's fair to say that Chelseas success goes hand in hand with the Abrahmovich millions, prior to that they were also rans in the First Divsion and FA Cup, of their six top divison titles only one is in the pre sugar daddy era.
Most of their success pre-sugar daddy was in winning cups.

Totally agree
And most of our success pre Glazer was winning leagues
Any league titles we won after the Glazers took over, and we started on the rocky road down was despite them and not because of them

Pulisic is very young and didn't grow up here, so he probably does think they are legendary.

I agree, however Abramovich took over like 15 years ago and since then Chelsea has had a lot of success and become one of the biggest names in world football. All I am saying is in 50 years from now Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City etc will all have histories of sustained success and will be considered the biggest clubs in the country.

I am no Chelsea fan, I just think people downplay other clubs success and status mainly because they just don't like them.

That's the point though. In 50 years sure, now, no.
