France v Argentina
What a game
Did anybody else look at the two French centre backs and then think of Smalling and Jones and then cry
Did you see how much better Pogba is when he is not getting constantly bollocked by Jose and when he is surrounded by quality players
Did anybody else see Welbeck the other night trying to put some slice on a ball to spin it back only to lump it straight ahead of him
I wondered where his greatest fan Maverick is these days
Do you think Scouse Ed will be in for Mbappe?
I don't mind getting beaten when you see a game like that but when i watch United clinging on to a one nil lead at home to Brighton i do get upset

Argentina and Portugal out in one day. Couldn't think of a more perfect football day.

Spain tiki taka'd themselves out of the cup, so today was pretty good.

With the exception of Neymar’s antics I agree that this is the best WC I can remember. It’s like the old guard is being phased out and a new group is brought in.

It would be great if Brazil had gone out, just because of Neymar. I hope they go out next round.

Belgium Japan now, a Japan win would be sensational.

While referees allow and condone Neymar to trying to change the game into an none contact best actor award competition then he is a true world class player. If the referees do not fall for his acting then he is a good player, but if they ever start hitting him with yellow and red cards then he would not be good enough to play for Leeds.

Personally, I think he's one of the most overrated players of all time.

That run and dummy from Lukaku is one of the most remarkable things you will ever see. What a fornicate player

England win on penalties- don’t get to say that too often.

A brutal way to lose and an absolutely fantastic way to win a game.

I said to Cindy when Henderson came up to take his pen, that "I hope if anyone's going to miss it's the scouser!". When he did miss she scowled at me and I said "Dont worry, we'll still win the shootout"

#soothsayer :)

I've still not recovered from last night. England win a penalty shoot out for the first time since Euro 96 against Spain. Which incidentally is the only other one we've ever won. My nerves are still shot.

The lads can be really proud of themselves to have done this, anything from now is an absolute bonus. Southgate has instilled a real team ethic into them, which shouldn't be a surprise given his under 21 stint, but still. I'm really enjoying watching his England side.

Sweden next, and if we can get through that a World Cup Semi Final awaits.

I would like to see a Belgium - England final but I'm afraid the Belgians will have a hard time beating Brazil (and France too if they get that far...)

The VAR is a great way to end the diving and acting on the pitch, shame it isn't used for this purpose. Neymar has made himself the joke of this tournament which is a shame, he could have been the star.

I couldn't agree more. The antics of the Colombian team was totally ignored by the VAR team and they have the nerve to complain about our 'antics'.

This was a good read on Southgates approach to penalties.

I wonder, there can't be too many coaches that have missed a penalty in a international shoot out, less still the decisive one.

Belgium vs France ... Wow - that's a game right there!!

I reckon France is the only team which IMO outmatches Belgium player for player (particularly in midfield) in terms of big names. Not sure who I want to win for this one!

I don't like the way the French are playing, they have enough quality to play more entertaining... Croatia or England will have a very hard time beating them in the final, but if it happens I'll be celebrating in France

What a brilliant World Cup this has been.

England eventually ran out of steam, but a first semi final appearance in nearly 30 years and the breaking of the penalty shoot out hoodoo leaves me incredibly proud of the team. Sure, you can easily argue things they could or should have done better, and you can say the team are rather one dimensional, but it was the youngest squad in the tournament and rather inexperienced. Aside from Cahil, who only played in the B team Belgium game, the most capped player is Henderson. Of the regular side, only Ashley Young is over 30, the next oldest is Kyle Walker at 28.

It's a good group of lads, with Southgate staying on, and the youth teams who are current World Champions coming though the future seems bright for England for once.
